New LMHC Licensure Changes to Affect Many

It’s not too late to pursue a career as a Mental Health and Human Services professional under current licensure rules.

Cambridge College’s dean of the School of Psychology and Counseling (SOPC), Dr. Niti Seth, has confirmed that mental health counseling licensure changes established by the Board of Allied Mental Health in Massachusetts will take effect on July 1, 2017.  

This will have a significant effect on individuals planning to enter a program of study to fulfill course requirements for mental health counseling licensure, such as SOPC’s CAGS or other Post-master’s Certificates. After July 1, 2017, students who have completed a less-than-60 credit qualifying master’s degree in Counseling Psychology, Psychological Studies or School Guidance Counseling, for example, will no longer have the opportunity to parlay those degrees with additional CAGS coursework to be eligible for licensure.

Beginning on July 1, 2017, students entering a graduate program to complete coursework necessary for licensure will be required to complete a full 60 credit program. The window of opportunity available under the old rules is rapidly closing with only three terms remaining: Fall 2016, Spring 2017 and Summer 2017. Review your options sooner rather than later.
